how to draw a mermaid tail

Drawing a mermaid tail is not particularly difficult if you know how to proceed. However, if you do not have a clear idea of how, for example, the mermaid fin can be shaped, it will be difficult.

You can draw a mermaid tail in three easy steps: First you draw a long tail which is where the mermaids legs would be. Secondly you draw the fin at the bottom of the tail. And thirdly you draw the scales on the tail.

I'm going to present you with three simple ways to draw each part of the mermaid tail with a pencil: The tail, the tail fin and the scales. I made a few sketches with step by step instructions that you can find below.

Drawing a mermaid tail step by step

You draw a mermaid by putting together a human torso and a mermaid tail. As mentioned, the mermaid tail consists of the tail itself, a fin and the mermaid scales.

So, how to draw a mermaid tail in an easy way? Here you see a picture that gives you an idea what the three essential parts are and how it will look:

Below I'll show you exactly how to draw each part of the mermaid tail giving you three options for each part.

It's easiest to follow the three steps in that order. But you can also start with the fin if you like.

Drawing the Mermaid tail

The most important part of the mermaid is, of course, the mermaid tail. To draw a mermaid tail, you should first consider which direction it should face. Should the mermaid stand completely straight in the water or should the tail be slightly curved so that it looks like she is swimming straight?

Basically, the mermaid tail is simply a shape that narrows from top to bottom. At the top, the end should be somewhat rounded, because that's where the mermaid's torso begins. And at the bottom, the fins come in the following step.

If you want, you can also draw some side fins on the side of the tail. It is best to do this relatively high up.

Drawing a mermaid tail curved to the left

You can use this mermaid tail, for example, if you want to draw a mermaid that looks to the right or swims.

Instruction

  1. Draw a long round line
  2. At the very end, change the direction of the curve until you reach the bottom
  3. Until just before the half of the tail, draw the line parallel to the other side upwards
  4. When you reach the middle, change the direction and draw a round line along the hips upwards
  5. At the top draw a round line between the two sides to close the mermaid tail

Drawing a straight mermaid tail

If you want to draw a mermaid directly from the front, this mermaid tail is good. But you can also use it to draw a mermaid from behind.

Instruction

  1. Draw a rounded line leaning down further to the right
  2. At the bottom draw a kind of small triangle as the end of the tail
  3. From there you draw a line upwards again, only this time getting wider towards the top
  4. At the top draw a round line between the two sides to close the mermaid tail
  5. Optionally you can draw side fins

Drawing a mermaid tail curved to the right

This mermaid tail looks good whether you want to draw a mermaid from the front or facing right or left. It's about the same shape as the first mermaid tail – only mirrored.

Instruction

  1. Draw a round line to about a third of the length you want the tail to have
  2. Change direction and draw the line round to the tip
  3. Start with a short rounded line parellel to the left side
  4. Then change direction and draw a long round line through to the top
  5. At the top draw a round line between the two sides to close the mermaid tail

Drawing the mermaid fin

You can also design the fins according to your taste. Here I show you three styles that you can use to draw them easily.

Drawing round mermaid fins

To draw these fins you first draw a long arc and at its end you turn the arc in the other direction. This way you have the top of a fin. From this point you do the same again, only this time the other way around. You first draw a longer bulbous line and at its end you turn the direction around and connect the line with the starting point.

Instruction

  1. Draw a long round line from the top
  2. Turn the direction of the line and draw about half as long as the previous line
  3. From this point draw another long round line in the other direction
  4. Change direction again to the end of the line
  5. Draw the second fin behind the first one

Drawing a serrated mermaid fin

You can draw this shape of mermaid fin with or without prongs. You may know the shape from some mermaid fins for swimming. I'll show you here how it looks with prongs. It looks a bit like a bell on the outside, tapers at the bottom, and the two sides of the fin finally meet in the middle.

Instruction

  1. Draw a round long line from the top to the bottom
  2. At the bottom draw three ticks
  3. Then draw the line from the last point upwards again, following the shape of the outer line
  4. Turn the direction and stop in the middle of the fin.
  5. Do the same for the second fin

Drawing a pointy mermaid fin

The last mermaid fin I show you here is similar in shape to the mermaid fin from Arielle. It has similarities to both the first and second fin. Because on the outside we draw a long round line like the second fin and on the inside we change direction once like the first and second fin.

Instruction

  1. Draw a round line starting a little higher from the mermaid tail
  2. At the bottom draw a round line back upwards
  3. About in the middle turn the direction and end the line at the top of the mermaid tail
  4. Do the same for the second fin

Drawing the mermaid scales

The scales can have many possible shapes. Round or pointed scales look best for mermaids. But you can also try other shapes if you feel like it.

Drawing round scales

Round scales are the most popular mermaid scales. To draw them, simply draw many small semicircles with the sides extended upward. It's best to start with slightly larger scales at the top and then let the scales get smaller row by row. It also looks good if you stagger the scale rows.

Drawing scattered round scales

You can also just hint at the scales on the mermaid tail by drawing in individual clusters of scales, but leaving plenty of white space in between.

Drawing pointed scales

For the pointed scales, you can proceed in the same way as for the round scales. The only difference is that instead of semicircles you use triangular points for the shape of the scales. As with the round scales, it looks best if you let the scales get a little smaller towards the bottom and draw the rows slightly offset from each other.
